Using the Calendar

There is quite a bit more that you can do with the calendar than just reading it or printing the calendar month by month and sticking it on the fridge.

You miss the dynamic nature of things with the fridge approach as the calendar will change regularly at busy times of the year.

1. You can click on a calendar entry which will then open up in a new window.

You will then have the option to export the entry.

The advantage is that if you use a calendar program on your computer you will be given the option to import the entry into that program.

How it works depends a bit on what program you use. It works well with Microsoft Outlook and Apple's iCal.

2. RSS subscription

If you navigate to the Regional Arts calendar in a web browser somewhere on the screen, usually top right or near the address line, you will see an icon like or .

You can do the same with the Bulletins page.

If you click on the icon it will load a number of calendar events for you to look at. More importantly you will be given the opportunity to subscribe to the RSS feed.

This means that every time you start your web browser it will automatically check for new calendar entries and make them available in the RSS feed. You do not have to visit the Rasouth and Southern Stars Calendar website for this to happen.

Be aware that subscribing to RSS within a school in the DET intranet will cause your browser to take you to the portal to log in first. You will need your portal username and password.

3. Calendar subscription

If your calendar program allows for subscription to ical calendars (.ics) you can subscribe to the URL;

http://www.rasouth.net/WebCalendar/publish.php/public.ics

This will automatically update your calendar program from the website when you are online. (You need to start your Calendar program first though)

Aple's iCal program is a good example.

Be aware that subscribing to a calendar within a school in the DET intranet will probably need you to have logged into the portal first.
